Betterworld

March 2024

The end of this planting season, saw a spectacular event on Sat 23 March 2024 on the University’s Kimberlow Hill East Campus site, supported by Gordon Eastham Estate & Ecology Manager.

37 volunteers, from Treemendous York and Good Gym, plus many “freelancers” turned up to plant 600 bare root trees mostly eight native species donated by Betterworld and several private individuals.

With our policy of No Plastics since 2022, we are extending trials of costly bio guards to protect trees from rabbits and some hares

Next to trial are new 60cm wraps with increasing diameter- Rainbow Terra shelters 2 – Rainbow Terra and Rainbow Terra Biodegradable Wrap Guard.

Without funders this couldn’t happen.

Biodegradable wraps that expand as the tree grows, for easy installation. Easywraps are a lower-cost alternative to spirals supported by 90cm strong canes. The vertical slit of our wraps creates a natural overlap that allows the wrap to grow with the tree and is easier to install than spirals, while the twin-wall construction offers improved growing conditions. Ideal for helping establish vines, trees, and hedges where the lateral growth of branches is important. We will be continuing the trial using 75cm bio spirals with 50cm diameter

On a chilly, blustery, but sunny, Spring day the place was a hive of activity and mixed skills, which had the trees planted in just over two hours. We all went home with the feeling of a job well done and a season finished in true community spirit.

Bring on 2024 – 25!
