Part 1: Statement of intent

This is the health and safety policy statement of:

Treemendous York Partnership

Our health and safety policy is to:

  • Prevent accidents
  • Manage health & safety risks during tree associated activities
  • Provide clear information to volunteers
  • Advise volunteers that children under the age of 18 and vulnerable adults must be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • Advise volunteers to wear weatherproof clothing, sturdy footwear and sun protection
  • Advise volunteers on site specific risks and to request that they inform the activity leader of any health & safety concerns they may identify.
  • Provide limited simple tools that have been checked prior to issue to volunteers (eg hammers, mallets, spades)
  • Review & revise this policy 5 yearly or in the case of any changes.

Part 2: Responsibilities for health and safety

1 Overall and final responsibility for health and safety:

Chair of Treemendous York Partnership

2 Day-to-day responsibility for ensuring this policy is put into practice:

Members of Management Committee taking the lead during tree related activities

3 To ensure health and safety standards are maintained/improved, the following people have responsibility in the following areas:

  • Members of Management Committee taking the lead for a tree related activity will undertake risk assessment prior to the activity and continue with dynamic risk assessments during the activity.
  • All members of the management committee will review any incidents or accidents that may occur during an activity, in order to prevent future occurrences.

4 All volunteers should:

  • co-operate with activity leaders on health and safety matters;
  • take reasonable care of their own health and safety; and
  • report all health and safety concerns to an appropriate person (as detailed above).

Part 3: Arrangements for health and safety

Risk assessment

  • We will undertake risk assessments prior to activities.
  • We will inform volunteers of any specific risks identified in their invitation.
  • We will continue to undertake dynamic risk assessments during activities.

Training

We will provide volunteers with information such as:

  • the activity location,
  • suitable footwear / clothing / sun protection,
  • nearest welfare facilities / where they can park vehicles / leave bikes,
  • any identified site specific risks,
  • children under the age of 18 and vulnerable adults must be accompanied by a responsible adult
  • how to use hammers / mallets / spades safely

Consultation

  • We will request that volunteers inform the activity leader of any health & safety concerns they may identify.
  • We will hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) every year, to discuss the activities and management of the group.

Evacuation

Volunteer activities are outdoors.
